Summer Mantle Decor

Well, you know me...I'm a little bit crazy when it comes to my mantle decor! I've always wanted a fireplace with a big mantle to decorate and now that I am lucky enough to have one I take every opportunity to be creative.

I also LOVE finding ways to make great looking stuff while saving a few bucks! This next project is JUST that! A few years ago Hubbs and I (and my father-in-law) built a bunch of shutters for our old house. The windows in the old house were older (and non-standard sizes) so we are not really able to use them now, BUT I still have them all stacked down in our garage! Painted dark brown they were not so incredible... but with a coat of light green paint and some cool dark hooks, I think they turned out pretty awesome! What do you think?

One of the best parts...with the brown paint beneath they distressed beautifully!
A little bit of raffia and brown rustic ribbon finished off the tops of the fox-glove floral bunches that I found!

This is a great project, even if you don't have a pile of old shutters that you need to re-purpose! Most antique/thrift stores/garage sales have a ton of old shutters to get rid of OR you could build your own! It is actually a pretty easy project. Old shutters are not your only option...how about an old window, or even a huge mirror?!
With a little imagination the possibilities are endless. What summer decor projects have you started?
